Gain awareness about substances and how substance use impacts families. Topics include: 

  • Basic definitions
  • Effects of use
  • Common drugs in Nebraska
  • Finding and using reliable information about drugs
  • Substance use signs and factors to consider before meeting with families
  • Priority populations, federal privacy laws, and levels of care.

Learning Objectives: 

Trainees will:
  1. be able to use the online job aid to recognize various illegal substances, indicators of use, and environmental concerns.
  2. be able to use the job aid to find drug detection times for urinalysis, saliva, and hair testing procedures.
  3. understand the effect of substance use on individual behavior.
  4. understand the effect of substance use on family behaviors and dynamics.
  5. be able to recognize some of the signs/indicators of home manufacture of methamphetamine.
  6. understand some of the worker safety issues and response options available when a methamphetamine laboratory is discovered.
  7. understand some of the medical concerns for children exposed to methamphetamine.
  8. be aware of federal drug and alcohol privacy laws.
  9. remember the priority populations and the services that must be provided.
  10. understand dual diagnosis and the importance of obtaining effective providers
  11. be aware of the levels of care and the expectations at each level.
